Newly Named Bancroft Hall Welcomes Students

Newly Named Bancroft Hall Welcomes Students

Published August 16, 2016

When Clarks Summit University residence halls open for the fall 2016 semester, dozens of students will be welcomed into newly named Bancroft Hall.

Founding Faculty Member
The residence hall is now named after Dr. Emery H. Bancroft, who helped found the school. Dr. Bancroft was also one of the four original full-time faculty members when the school opened in Johnson City, New York in 1932. He was a Sergeant in the U. S. Army before he was called to serve as a pastor and later as a member of the school’s faculty. As dean and chairman of the faculty, he wrote the school’s original Catalogue Prospectus. Bancroft Memorial Hall paid tribute to the well-loved professor on the Johnson City campus, making it especially fitting that this building will also bear his name.

Removing Chances for Confusion
This dwelling was originally named after Dr. Robert T. Ketcham. An investigation of child abuse and sexual sin was recently released concerning this church leader’s son, Donn Ketcham.

While the residence hall was not named after the younger Ketcham, this fact will not be apparent to the many people who will simply hear or see the name on our campus. CSU’s executive committee of the Board of Trustees decided to rename the dwelling to remove any chance of confusion and to stand with the victims in an effort to help them avoid additional pain upon seeing this name on one of the campus buildings.

New Resident Director Named
Bancroft Hall, like other CSU residence halls, was intentionally designed to facilitate meaningful relationships. The hall also welcomes a new residence hall director. Nick Charlton, director of enrollment services, was chosen for the role. He and his family moved into Bancroft Hall this summer.
