Jillian Mirro: Young Professional Award Nominee

Jillian Mirro, a 2022 Clarks Summit University graduate, is now content specialist for Keystone Mission. What started out as an internship with the non-profit organization became a full-time job just a few months later. Mirro, a Communications major, was also one of three finalists for Intern of the Year in the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Young Professional Awards.

At Clarks Summit University, Mirro developed a passion for writing and relationships. She says CSU prepared her for her career, “through intentional mentorship, interactive teaching, and a community that is consistently encouraging and pushing you to do your best. Clarks Summit University has done a phenomenal job at giving me ample opportunities like “Vantage Magazine.” It was a great place for me to try my hand out at journalism, creative writing, poetry, and, eventually, becoming an editor. Clarks Summit University has helped me at my lowest and provided direction for me when I needed it. It has given me the skills to be able to direct others and come back to the source of life when I think I could do it all by myself.” Mirro accredits God for using Clarks Summit University to help her get where she is now.

During her senior year, Mirro did not know what to do after graduation. Ryan Buchanan, development director of Keystone Mission and CSU alumnus, visited campus to speak about the organization. Mirro recalls, “it was definitely a God thing. I remember when Ryan [Buchanan] came to present Keystone Mission in volunteer opportunities. He mentioned that there were internship opportunities in the fall, and, for some reason, I felt like God was telling me to go talk to him.”

Mirro reached out to Buchanan and earned the internship spot with Keystone Mission. For three months, she performed a variety of tasks such as interviewing guests, writing articles, and auditing the Keystone Mission website. Soon after, she became the organization’s grant writer before she was offered the position as content specialist.

With her new position, Mirro became in charge of all the marketing aspects of Keystone Mission. “I love that I get to write all day…get to tell people about the good work we do at Keystone Mission and explain to them the good that we’re doing in the community,” she says. Mirro went from uncertainty about the future to a fulfilling position in ministry for the glory of God.

Keystone Mission is a faith-based non-profit organization in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre that serves guests who are without food or without a home. They provide hope and help through services and programs in Northeast PA.

Mirro was named one of three finalists for the 2022 Intern of the Year in the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professional Awards. “It feels surreal,” she said. “I’m grateful that I’ve been given a good work ethic from my parents and, obviously, the Lord to be able to serve.”
