“People Helping People: Building Your Counseling Toolbox” is a new online micro-course taught by Dr. Wayne Slusser, dean of Baptist Bible Seminary. The micro-course, a short, affordable, non-credit offering, is the first of its kind developed by Clarks Summit University’s Department of Online Learning.
Many people want to be equipped to effectively help others; the need for people to reach out and help their neighbors, children and friends has only grown in recent times. Slusser will walk learners through the theory and practice of counseling, so learners will be able to:
- Develop a definition of biblical counseling
- Identify and utilize Scripture references for specific human problems
- Counsel their own heart as they prepare to counsel others
- Apply counseling techniques to a variety of real-life scenarios
This course features short video lessons with discussion opportunities. The case-based course presents real-world scenarios to engage learners in a response.
“Learners can apply their knowledge and quickly transfer it to the practical aspects of their lives,” explains Erica Young, executive director for the Department of Online Learning at CSU.
Knowledge checks move learners through self-paced lessons that are completed entirely online with no in-person meetings or the need to be present online at specific times. In fact, although the course will open August 17, users can register whenever it is convenient for them. Learners will gain the skill, knowledge and confidence they need to make a difference and help others through life’s difficult circumstances.
“My desire is to provide learners with an opportunity to grow in the various ministries in which they serve,” explains Slusser.
Slusser has years of experience in the public and private sector. He served for 14 years on the pastoral staff of a church plant that grew, in part, due to its counseling program. His love for God and knowledge of God’s Word guide his life and teaching.
Learners will have 60 days from when they register to access the course. Working at their own pace, they can expect “People Helping People: Building Your Counseling Toolbox” to take approximately six total hours to complete. Participants move through short video lessons and intentional online exercises as part of an easy-to-digest online video format. The course is flexible and set up to fit into any schedule with participants able to start beginning August 17. This micro course will help learners gain knowledge and skill, without requiring a huge time commitment or pursuit of a full degree.

Other affordable online personal and professional development micro-courses are being developed, with plans to offer a variety of topics in the coming months.
“We want to provide learners with an opportunity to gain skills relevant to their workplace or ministry without pursuing a full degree,” says Young. “We also want to come alongside those who are thinking about exploring a new path in ministry or a new career. This low-commitment, low-cost course might be just what they need to discover their next career step.”
The non-credit micro-courses are geared toward adult learners who desire to gain practical skills, personal enrichment and professional resources to enhance their career or ministry.
