Baptist Bible Seminary: Worldwide Influence for Christ

Published October 2, 2019 in Summit Magazine

Online education allows for unique global impact, since Baptist Bible Seminary students from around the world can learn from their native country while they continue to invest in ministry at home. Students in BBS master’s degree programs can earn their entire degree without ever setting foot in Clarks Summit. Doctoral candidates complete the majority of their coursework online, supplemented by short-stay, on-campus modules offered a few times throughout the year.

Serving in South Africa
Dr. V. Sundrum Thomas (’01) is a three-time BBS graduate and now principal (president) of Durban Bible College in South Africa. “I am indebted to our loving Heavenly Father who, through Mr. Paul Golden, other faculty members and friends, ensured my admission into my Christian and theological education which adequately prepared me for godly living and Christian service.” He also lectures students on courses such as nature and practice of spirituality, creative thinking and relational skills, evangelism and discipleship. “My greatest joy was to see God working through us to reach children, men and women with the gospel of Jesus Christ both in various parts of South Africa and Southern Africa…To God be the glory.”

Influence in Myanmar
Lian Kim (’11) earned his Doctor of Philosophy in New Testament from BBS. After receiving his degree, Lian worked with others in his home country of Myanmar to

build Koinonia Baptist Seminary to train pastor-teachers and Bible expositors. He now serves as president of the seminary. A few times each year, the school offers seminars to strengthen the theology and leadership skills of pastors who have little theological education.

Lian is also a writer and a translator. Many pastors in his country don’t have more than 10 books in their library. By writing and translating, Lian is providing otherwise scarce resources to ministry leaders in his country.

In Myanmar, preschool is one of the most effective centers for evangelism. Lian took a major role in starting and coaching three preschools to spread throughout the hill country and Yangon City. About 100 children are hearing the gospel every day through the schools.

Lian also serves as a missions committee member of Evangelical Baptist Churches, founded in the 1970s after separating from a larger group who did not believe in being saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Though they started from scratch, the Lord blessed EBC by establishing about 300 churches. “We are now sending some 40 missionaries to the most unreached areas where most of the people have never heard of the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ,” Lian says. He also serves with his father through revival meetings and camp ministry, through which 130 people were baptized last year.
