Ministry Highlights

Preaching is always a highlight. But what has made it great recently is the support around my preaching. Our staff has a great way of working together each week on the sermon and helping each other grow in our preaching skill. Then, I was able to have good, constructive feedback afterward. This has been advice that I have continued to chew on throughout the month and am working to implement in my sermon this month.

After a second month in the job, I’m starting to get into the groove of things. We were able to produce a calendar and I’m getting the full year plan in place. The big-picture, philosophical things are starting to take root in the actual ministry and that is fun to do. I’m excited to see what fruit comes from the work we’re putting into it now!

I was able to continue to meet with individual teens this month. That has been such an encouragement because I know that these personal relationships will be the backbone for the student ministry as a whole. I’ve got a great team of volunteers on board with me and I’m so encouraged by the excitement that is there right now. I’m praying that we can all be focused on the spiritual maturity of the teens we have while God continues to bring more students to our group.

Key Prayer Requests

Pray that the student ministry sees growth, both in the spiritual depth of the teens and the simple numbers of the group. There is a huge number of high school students in the area, but very few growing student ministries and I am praying that we can be effective in reaching the unchurched teens.

Pray for the encouragement of our teens. It is sometimes difficult to feel that your youth group is small and it seems hard to get it going, so I’m praying that the teens are focused on the right things and are seeking the things of the Lord.

Pray for me as I continue to join this church staff and get to know what it looks like to be a part of this team. It has been a great start and I am just praying that it continues to go well.

Prominent Lessons

The Lord has really been teaching me the value of knowing how to serve others well. Specifically, I want to be moving away from general offerings of help and vague statements of encouragement to just doing things for people. Our family has been so encouraged and blessed through the loss of a close family member this month and it helped me see the value in just seeing a need and doing it. People might not ever ask for specific help so offering specific things can usually be a great blessing to them.

I learned the value of carefully crafted sermons/illustrations/applications. It’s easy to preach a generic sermon or to simply teach facts, but the art of drawing people into what the Word says and showing them how to apply it to their lives can be easily overlooked. I would say that this has been the greatest point of growth in my ministry this month.

Key Goals for the Next Month

We’re making some infrastructure changes to our volunteer system and to our service structure. My goal is to work through that well and to lead well through the changes. Growth means change and we are seeing growth, so change is happening. My goal is to be effective in my communication.

Another goal is to set up structures in my student ministry for more direct and effective accountability with the teens. I want to have small group leaders and myself meeting regularly to encourage and exhort our teens.

This seems like a much more minor goal, but I want to be continually reading and growing in my knowledge of the Bible and of youth ministry, so I have a couple books on my desk that I’d like to have done this month.

Ministry Highlights

I re-started my involvement in teaching kid’s church this month! I taught  preschool before our kids were born and it is always fun to get back into a  classroom!

I’m a table leader at MOPs (Mothers of Preschoolers), and we had two  great meetings in October. I gave the devotional at one of the meetings,  which focused on the importance of having a “Family Mission Statement” so  that we aren’t running or laboring in vain. We looked through Philippians 1-2 to  see Paul’s example and we were all challenged to have every moment of our  lives reflect the Gospel, as Paul’s life does.

I attended a women’s conference with a few other Harvest Bible Chapels,  and it was amazing! The focus was on finding our only true and lasting  refreshment in time spent in the Word and in prayer. Since prayer is an area  that God has been growing me in, I’ve been able to take some tangible  action steps after that conference. Specifically, setting time aside on Mondays  (Jack’s day off, so he can play with the kids!) to pray for an hour. It’s been  revolutionary in how I view prayer and my RELATIONSHIP with God. I’ve been  so blessed and fed by the teaching at our church, and other Harvests.

Key Prayer Requests

Wisdom in knowing when to say “no” to things (feeling a bit  overwhelmed with all that I CAN be involved in… not always sure what I  SHOULD be involved in, especially with my commitment to  homeschooling our kids!) Wisdom in knowing how best to help and encourage Jack in his ministry. Lots of holiday travel coming up in November!

Prominent Lessons

The biggest time of growth for me in the past month was my time at the  women’s conference and the way that it shaped my prayer life since. I have  been praying that God would give me a desire to pray - even that He would  remind me to pray - and I have seen Him answer that prayer! I love to see  growth! I also have noticed that as I grow, the things the I am convicted about  become more and more inward - heart issues.

Key Goals for the Next Month

Organizing our homeschool routine so that our time together is fruitful.
