Clarks Summit University Welcomes Dr. Keith Marlett to Counseling Department Professorship

Clarks Summit University Welcomes Dr. Keith Marlett to Counseling Department Professorship

Published July 19, 2017

After a long search for a qualified professor for CSU’s Counseling department, the Trustee Academic Committee has accepted Dr. Keith Marlett for full-time professorship. Marlett brings with him an impressive résumé and sound doctrinal agreement; making him highly qualified for the faculty position.

Professional Qualifications

Marlett earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Professional Counseling from Liberty University (’00, ’08), his B.S. in Pastoral Studies from Liberty Baptist College (’78), a Bible Diploma from Thomas Road Bible Institute (’75) and his A.A.S. in Police Science from Auburn Community College. He has also completed additional graduate studies at Ashland Theological Seminary and Pensacola Christian College.

His professional teaching experience includes professorial positions at Davis College, Grace College, Liberty University and Ashland Theological Seminary as well as an adjunct professorship at Clarks Summit University.

Of his time as an adjunct professor for CSU, Marlett said, “I appreciated then—and I still do—the emphasis at CSU on the power of God’s Word to change lives. The mandate is clear at CSU; the world needs the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Marlett has extensive experience in the realms of counseling, administration and pastoring; including serving as Founding Pastor of Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church in Oneonta, New York; working as Director of the Smetzer Counseling Center on the campus of Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio; and serving as a Local Criminal Court Judge in Oneonta, New York.

Marlett’s passion for biblical counseling is clear. “Biblical counseling takes us back to our Creator for meeting our need. There is profound joy in knowing that as we rely on Him, we can be assured that our counseling ministry has significance beyond human understanding or measure, he said.”

Regarding Marlett’s qualification, Counseling department chair, Dr. Lynelle Buchanan said, “Our faculty search was extensive, and in the end, God brought us exactly what we needed. Dr. Marlett’s pastoral experience and commitment to a biblical model of counseling will strengthen our program. Furthermore, his vast experience and love for students will make him a great mentor for our students, both on campus and online.”

Excellence and Passion

While his resume is quite extensive, what really distinguishes Marlett is his open and kind demeanor coupled with his passion not only for teaching but for learning.

Marlett shares his passion and his hopes for his time at CSU, saying, “It is my heart’s desire to be a constant learner and not just rely on what I already know or methods I have used in the past. Although I believe that God has given me many service opportunities in my role as a minister, counselor and educator, I want to share those experiences with the students in a way that will help them on the path that God has chosen for each one of them.” He continues by saying, “I also want to approach each new class of students with the expectation that I will also glean much from them, as they have all journeyed with Christ.”

College Faculty/Assistant Professor of Counseling, Dr. Heather Hall, said, “Dr. Marlett will bring a roundedness to our Counseling department through his pastoral background and his perspective of professional counseling combined with pastoral care. His biblical heartbeat and alignment with our counseling perspective make him a great fit for CSU.”

Marlett and his wife Nancy have been married for 36 years, and they have two adult children, Sarah and Daniel, along with two grandchildren.
