Students Earn Scholarships for Serving While Studying
Inaugurations of university presidents typically focus on one honored guest, but CSU’s 10th President broke from this tradition. Instead, Dr. Jim Lytle put more attention on students. During Inauguration Chapel on January 29, 2016, he awarded 14 scholarships to students who study on campus or online in undergraduate, graduate or seminary programs.
Dr. Lytle selected scholarship winners from essays of students, “who are meeting others at their point of need as Jesus Christ would, creatively communicating Christ and truth.”
“Donors’ sacrifice has not only allowed me to be here and study and grow in the Word of God, but it has also given me the opportunity to pursue my passions in ministry by providing for my school bill, so I can take steps toward a career in missions!”

Undergraduate Presidential Inauguration Scholarship Winners
Anthony Vincent (Early Childhood/Elementary Education PreK-4 major from Kingston, New York) created a university-level course to encourage students to serve on mission trips and to learn more from the experience.
Joshua Harvey (Sports Management major from Bronx, New York) started a ministry to help clothe the homeless, serves at the Scranton Rescue Mission and initiated an inner-city sports ministry.
David Buchanan (Pre-Seminary major from Waxhaw, North Carolina) plays on a worship team, teaches Sunday school and leads a house church at an inner-city church plant.
Kayla Underwood (Specialized Ministries major with an emphasis in intercultural youth ministries from Pembroke, New York) facilitates discipleship and plays music during a church’s Spanish worship service.
Lauren Shepherd (Counseling major from Sandusky, Ohio) led her residence hall in making blankets for a local rescue mission and collecting Bibles for a local prison.
Rachel Gendron (Math Education major from Lansdale, Pennsylvania) ministers to inner-city kids and teens.
Ryan Landry (Sports and Health Science major from Valatie, New York) organized an inner-city men’s basketball program.
Garrick Paden (Biology major from Mifflintown, Pennsylvania) is working to create a feeding program for impoverished people of Haiti.
Drew Bundy (Church Music major from DuBois, Pennsylvania) generated a method to help churches and worship leaders choose Christ-centered music.
Graduate and Seminary Winners
Michele Fry (Master of Science in Counseling student from Solon, Ohio) created a support group for adoptive and foster families and helps human trafficking victims. Read her story.
Jason Sullivan (Master of Education student from Cameron, North Carolina) oversees education at a therapeutic camp for troubled boys.
Derrick Hicks (Master of Divinity student from Avon, New York) shares faith with others at a secular job, which resulted in him leading a co-worker to the Lord and baptizing him.
Luke Peterson (Master of Divinity student from Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) reaches young people by coaching basketball.
John Vo (Doctor of Philosophy student from Whittier, California) leads English and Mandarin congregations in a primarily Chinese church.
