Modification of University Name

Published June 30, 2016

After receiving approval from the PA Department of Education, Summit University of Pennsylvania plans to modify the name of the school to Clarks Summit University. The school will begin operating under the modified name on July 5, 2016.

The unanticipated name adjustment process was in response to the threat of legal action from a religious organization in Montana. Trustees and university leadership worked through attorneys to come to an amicable agreement to modify the name and satisfy trademark requirements.

The school’s name will continue to reflect the many opportunities available to alumni and students as they serve Christ. “We love our community of Northeast Pennsylvania, the Abington region and Clarks Summit,” says Mel Walker, vice president for communications and external relations. “We’ve always had a good relationship with our community, and we want that to continue. Now our name will more specifically reflect this region, which is a great place to live, serve and study.”

“We’ve long been known as, ‘the school in Clarks Summit,’ so the modified name is naturally a good fit.” continues University President Dr. Jim Lytle.

The university’s mission, to prepare students to serve Jesus Christ worldwide through a variety of ministries and careers, remains the same as it was when the school was founded over 80 years ago.

“The summit of a mountain is a wonderful vantage point,” explains Dr. Lytle. “Likewise, from Clarks Summit University, our students can see vast opportunities available to them. We know that people around the globe need the hope of Christ, and we are honored to continue to prepare students to share that hope and meet those needs in a variety of ways.

Along with the name modification, the school’s website will change to, and the athletics website will be Questions can be directed to
